Michael has recently stepped into the role of leading South Australia’s iconic Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium. Managing three large estates across Adelaide’s CBD and picturesque Hills, draws on Michael’s significant background in the cultural and science sector. Michael’s career is strongly linked to the natural history of our world and provides a specific focus on the connections between nature, people and culture.

His experience over the last 20 years spans education, public programming, exhibition development, strategic planning and cultural leadership in museums of science and natural history. He has held leadership positions across a number of high profile organisations including the British Council, the Australian Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum, and at the Natural History Museum in London.

Prior to relocating to Adelaide to head up the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium, Michael worked as Assistant Director and Chief Experience Officer at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, a role that blended history and maritime archaeology, Navy and defence studies, ocean science and sustainability, and First Nations and migration programs.
