Yann Gagnon is a distinguished leader in botanical garden conservation and management. Since 2022, he has applied his extensive expertise as Director of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, where he focuses on enriching the Gardens’ offerings by blending the preservation of Tasmania’s unique flora with engaging, visitor experiences that aim to captivate and inspire.

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, established in 1818, is Australia’s second oldest botanical garden and is renowned for its unique collections and significant heritage infrastructure, much of which dates back to its founding. As Director, Yann oversees the stewardship of these vital collections and the ongoing preservation of the Gardens’ historical assets.

Under his leadership, the Gardens continue to play a critical role in the global network of botanic gardens. This includes overseeing initiatives such as the Tasmanian Seed Conservation Centre, created in 2005 through a partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (UK). The Centre is pivotal in ensuring the long-term security and conservation of Tasmania’s unique flora, currently safeguarding over 70 million seeds across 2,100 collections.

Before joining the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Yann held several senior leadership positions in Canada. He served as Director of the VanDusen Botanical Garden and Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver and was the Associate Director of Canada’s largest horticultural portfolio, which includes the globally renowned Stanley Park.

Yann holds qualifications in Horticultural and Environmental Science and has a robust background in botanical gardens management and horticultural science. His expertise and vision continue to guide the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens in its mission to conserve and showcase a thriving Tasmanian botanical, social and cultural destination.
